Halloween Candy/Bake Sale

Project Volunteer will be hosting a Halloween Candy/Bake Sale on Monday, October 31, 2011 from 11 am - 2 pm in the South Lobby of the Student Center Building.

If anyone is interested in helping out, please let us know ASAP! We need donations of baked goods, candy, and other items for sale.

We also need to assign people to work the bake sale table. This is a fundraiser for Alternatives for Girls Shelter & our "Volunteer of the Year Fund".

Any ideas & donations of food and candy items are welcome. Halloween costumes are encouraged, but not required.

WSU Smart Kids Mentoring/Tutoring Organization needs volunteers as they are starting their program in October. The organization's goal is to help children reach their highest academic potential. The volunteers will mentor/tutor children in their schools or local libraries. A mentor will guide a child who is intending to move along the same path as the mentor. Tutors will only teach the subjects where they show much strength. The volunteers of this program will mentor and tutor kids in Wayne and Macomb counties.

They are currently needed in these 3 schools:

Loving Elementary School (5th graders) --Detroit from 3-5p
Allen Academy (Sports team) -- Detroit from 2:50-4p
Warren Mott High School--Warren from 2:30-4:30p

Volunteers can mix and match schools or choose one school. The Smart Kids Mentoring/Tutoring Org count their community service hours too. They are really passionate in helping kids be better in their academics, future careers so on, so this is a great opportunity for anyone who is interesting in making a big difference in a child's life.

Everybody who attends will be getting hours for PV. The fee is $7 per person and $3 for the skates.

The World Medical Relief is looking for volunteers the week of December 13th to package medical supplies or sort through the pills in their pharmacy:

The Detroit Area Agency on Aging Holiday Meals on Wheels program is seeking volunteers to pakc and deliver 5,500 fresh-cooked, hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors in the metro Detroit area on Thanksgiving.

Volunteers are needed on:

Wed, Nov 24th: 8am - noon to assemble the cold portion of the meal
Thur, Nov 25th: 6am - 10am to package the hot food portion of the meal for distribution to eight sites.

(2) Volunteer with Playworks in Detroit Schools

Playworks is a national nonprofit organization that supports learning by providing safe, healthy and inclusive play and physical activity to schools at recess and throughout the entire school day. Their mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity adn safe, meaningful play. This is their first year in Detroit and they are currently in 16 Detroit Public Schools. They are looking for volunteers to help in these schools during recess as well as in their after school programs. It will be a wonderful opportunity for Wayne State University students to work alongside their Coaches and bring back play to the children in Detroit.

Here is a document with their current volunteer opportunities. Please read "The Player" and "The Pro" These are the spots that they are currently looking to fill at each of their 16 schools. Please note that these would be ongoing opportunities, and they are would like people to commit to 2 hours per week. If you decide to contact Playworks in regards to this wonderful opportunity, please do so only if you are willing to make a commitment that they ask for. It's one thing to miss a Project Volunteer event but quite another to break your promises with children.

St. Patrick Senior Center is in need for volunteers for great fundraising event that they are doing on Friday, 11/13/09 from 5:00PM to 11:00PM.

They need 6 volunteers to help prepare and serve lunch then clean up after the lunch. They would be here from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

Their "St. Pat Mo' Palooza" Friday, 11/13/09 from 5:00PM to 11:00PM is a fun event with a live Las Vegas Style Motown Tribute with the Temptations, Aretha Franklin and Jackie Wilson. They expect about 300 people.

Here is a list (below) of volunteer opportunities for the Palooza and the estimated times they will need someone. Each of these jobs requires more then one volunteer. There are plenty of opportunities to work more then one of these jobs and if someone can't work the full shift that is ok too as long as you let us know so we can inform the coordinator of St. Pat Mo' Palooza.

All of these jobs will be on Friday, 11/13/09.

Set-Up - 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Food Prep - 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Decorating the building - 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Cleaning - 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Food Runners - 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM

Back Stage Manager - 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM (need for the complete shift)

Bar Back/Keep bartenders stocked/bus tables - 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM (21 or

For our first event this semester, we will be working with the Indian Student Association in the "Be the Change" project.

The day will start at 9 AM at the Student Center (one of the Hillberry rooms) with a free breakfast. After that, all the volunteers will be able to sign up for one of the five project sites.

Meet at the Welcome Center on the 17th to obtain work assignments and clean up tools. After the work is done we'll regroup and enjoy a lunch/get-together. T-shirts will be distributed at this time.

Hunger and Homelessness Week 2008

Blood Drive and Career Fair

Wayne State is having a Blood Drive the week of February 11th - 15th, 2008 .

Volunteer at Career Fair and Get Free Food
The following is not officially through Project Volunteer, but if you are interested in participating, please contact PJ Rao from Career Services directly at prao[atwayne[dot]edu.

The 2008 Employment Expo will be held in the Ballroom of the Student Center Building on Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 1pm - 4pm

Career Services is looking for volunteers to assist with escorting employers from either Anthony Wayne Drive OR parking structures #2 and #5 to the Student Center Building and/or helping employers transport table display items (if needed).

Volunteers would be needed between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Food will be provided to volunteers and letters of appreciation/ achievement can be written by Career Services to the group for your portfolio or to your national organizations.

This is a great volunteer opportunity, so if you’re interested, please email PJ Rao.

The Christmas Store!

The Christmas Store is a place where low-income parents can come and buy their children inexpensive Christmas gifts!

We will be volunteering Saturday, December 15th at the Metropolitan United Methodist Church and will need 5-7 volunteers at each of the following times:

12-4pm
(gift wrapping, running and transport)

and

3-6pm
(mainly tear-down)

We need dedicated student leaders willing to work together with other Wayne State University students in a shared commitment to the betterment of the city of Detroit through service. Project Volunteer's primary focus is to organize, participate, and involve Wayne's own students in volunteer projects designed to help the people of Detroit. We create partnerships with local organizations such as the Greening of Detroit, PBJ Outreach Ministries, and Habitat for Humanity to make a positive difference in the community at large. The Greening of Detroit, Greater Corktown Development Corporation, and dozens of residents are working together to harvest and replant trees from teh HTR Nursery. We have been caring for the trees for over three years and now they are ready to be taken out and planted in the greatest Corktown neighborhood. They are asking for 100 volunteers. We (WSU-Project Volunteer) can take as many volunteers as we can. Just make sure to RSVP via email so that we can confirm your attendance.

Several African Americans leaders are appearing, including JoAnn Watson of the Detroit City Council; TV and radio personality, Charles Pugh, and N.Charles Anderson, President of the Detroit Urban League. The focus of the program is to encourage the youth of today to become more involved in the City of Detroit. The WSU Gospel Choir is performing as well.

There are two projects to choose from:

-Habitat for Humanity: Working on construction of a home. People should dress in layers of clothes. The clothes should be ones that can get dirty. Work boots or shoes that can get dirty are appropriate. Tools will be provided. Students should bring protective eye wear and work gloves if they have them. Can host 10-15 people. Will be led by Prabha, a student in the Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter.

-Motor City Blight Busters: Working on a building remodeling project. People should dress in layers of clothing that can get dirty. We will be working from 9:30am-Noon. We will meet outside of the Student Center at 9am on Monday, January 16th. Can host 30-50 people. Will be led by Audra from the Dean of Students Office.

Hello Project Volunteer Members!

The Hunger and Homelessness Volunteer Event is Finally Here to round off Hunger and Homelessness Week!

And as a Bonus Treat to all the volunteers that come out on Saturday November 19th, WE WILL PROVIDE TO YOU A FREE BREAKFAST to start your day of volunteering!

We will be going to :

PBJ Outreach: We will be feeding the hungry and homeless in Cass Corridor with a FULL MEAL including Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

Detroit Rescue Mission: SOUP KITCHEN SERVICE AT ITS REALEST! We will be piling on the food for close to 300 meals served to the Detroit's hungry and homeless who rely on the Detroit Rescue Mission for their daily meals!

Please Respond by contacting ao8506@wayne.edu with the volunteer site you would like to participate in! You will recieve a response with the time you will need to meet at the first floor of the STUDENT CENTER BUILDING on the 19th of this month!

Breast Cancer Awareness Lollipop Sale

Volunteers are needed for Breast Cancer Awareness Lollipop sale.
When: Oct. 31st from 2pm-4pm
Where: State Hall (fish bowl area)

You should be prepared to show up at least 15 min before your shift begins so that Dyani and Jelena can give you a debriefing about what the lollipops are selling for and give you a brief overview of the breast cancer information that we are handing out.

Drive Safely to WSU is a campus-wide campaign to promote safe driving habits.

This year Project Volunteer is assisting with the campaign.

Come join us and help to encourage Wayne State students to practice safe driving habits.

* Sidewalk Chalking and Painting (Sunday, September 25, 2005)
A day to decorate the sidewalks of WSU to promote the Drive Safely Campaign.

* Opening Ceremony Attendee
There will be a Drive Safely to WSU campaign Opening Ceremony, where several Michigan dignitaries will be present as spectators and speakers. Come out and show all of Michigan that WSU is all about safe driving.

* Event Guide
Encourage and guide WSU students to participate in the Drive Safely to WSU events.

* Door Prize Announcer
There will be door prizes given away each hour. Be the person to announce who wins the gift of the hour!

* "This Drink's on Us" bar

The next class of MCC AmeriCorps*VISTAs will be placed on host sites across the state of Michigan for a year of service from November, 2005 to November, 2006. Benefits include: an Annual Living Allowance of approximately $10,000, an Education Award of $4,725 or End-of-Service Award of $1,200 upon completion of full term of service, Health Insurance, Student Loan Forbearance, Training and Professional Development, and Childcare Assistance Subsidies (if eligible).

2006 Brick Awards For Youth Community Leaders Deadline for Applications: November 1, 2005

Each year, Do Something, a national not-for-profit organization that inspires young people to believe that change is possible, honors six outstanding leaders age 18 and under and three outstanding leaders between the ages of 19 and 25 who use their talents to take action that measurably strengthens their communities in the areas of community building, health, or the environment. Each of the 18 and under winners is awarded a $5,000 higher education scholarship and a $5,000 community grant, to be directed by the award winner to the not-for-profit organization of his or her choice.

Winners in the 19 to 25 category each receive a $10,000 community grant.

Do Something only accepts online applications for the program, and will not accept nomination applications (applicants must apply on their own behalves).
